We report the discovery of a $(1.0 \pm 0.28) \times 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$ Supermassive Black Hole (BH) at the centre of NGC 708, the Brightest Cluster Galaxy of Abell 262. Such high BH masses are very rare and allow to investigate BH - host galaxy scaling relations at the high mass end, which in turn provide hints about the (co)evolution of such systems. NGC~708 is found to be an outlier in all the canonical scaling relations except for those linking the BH mass to the core properties. The galaxy mass-to-light ratio points to a Kroupa IMF rather than Salpeter, with this finding confirmed using photometry in two different bands. We perform this analysis using our novel triaxial Schwarzschild code to integrate orbits in a 5-dimensional space, using a semi-parametric deprojected light density to build the potential and non-parametric Line-of-Sight Velocity Distributions (LOSVDs) derived from long-slit spectra recently acquired at Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) to exploit the full information in the kinematic. We find that the galaxy geometry changes as a function of the radius going from prolate, nearly spherical in the central regions to triaxial at large radii, highlighting the need to go beyond constant shape profiles. We aim to participate in the calibration of the X-ray photon count rate to halo mass scaling relation of galaxy clusters selected in the first eROSITA All-Sky Survey on the Western Galactic Hemisphere (eRASS1) using KiDS-1000 weak-lensing (WL) data. We measure the radial shear profiles around eRASS1 galaxy clusters using background galaxies in KiDS-1000, as well as the cluster member contamination. Furthermore we provide consistency checks with the other stage-III WL surveys who take part in the eRASS1 mass calibration, DES Y3 and HSC-Y3. We determine the cluster member contamination of eRASS1 clusters present in KiDS-1000 based on source number density profiles, where we account for the obscuration caused by cluster galaxies. The extracted shear profiles, together with the contamination model and the lens sample selection, are then analysed through a Bayesian population model. We calibrate the WL mass bias parameter by analysing realistic synthetic shear profiles from mock cluster catalogues. Our consistency checks between KiDS-1000 and DES Y3 & HSC-Y3 include the comparison of contamination-corrected density contrast profiles employing the union of background sources around common clusters, as well as the individual scaling relation results. We present a global contamination model for eRASS1 clusters in KiDS-1000 and the calibration results of the X-ray photon count rate to halo mass relation. The results of the WL mass bias parameter show that the uncertainty of the multiplicative shear bias dominates the systematic error budget at low clusters redshifts while the uncertainty of our contamination model does at high ones. The cross-checks between the three WL surveys show that they are statistically consistent with each other. This enables for the first time cosmological constraints from clusters calibrated by three state-of-the-art WL surveys. (abridged), Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures

In this study, we compare the structural parameters of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) to those of other dwarf galaxies and investigate whether UDGs form a distinct population. We observed deep $u'$-, $g'$-, and $r'$-band images (maximum limiting surface brightness [3$\sigma$, $10"\times10"$] $u'$ and $g'$: $\mathrm{\approx 30\,mag\,arcsec^{-2}}$; $r'$: $\mathrm{\approx 29\,mag\,arcsec^{-2}}$) of A1656 (Coma cluster) and A262 with the Wendelstein Wide Field Imager at the 2.1 m-Fraunhofer Wendelstein Telescope on the Wendelstein Observatory. We measure $u'-g'$ and $g'-r'$ colors and structural parameters using parametric fitting of tens of thousands of potential UDGs and other dwarf galaxies. Cluster members are identified and separated from diffuse background galaxies based on red sequence membership and location in the $u'-g'$ vs. $g'-r'$ color-color diagram. We find 11 UDGs in A262 and 48 UDGs in A1656. The latter is six times more than van Dokkum et al. found in the overlapping region. By comparing the structural parameters of UDGs to non-UDGs in our sample and to spheroidals from the literature, we do not find any separation in all tested parameter spaces. Instead, UDGs form the diffuse end of the already well-known spheroidal population and slightly extend it. Furthermore, we find that the UDG definition used by Koda et al. and Yagi et al. mainly extends the definition by van Dokkum et al. toward ordinary spheroidals., Comment: 39 pages, 24 figures, 11 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

We present photometric and morphological analyses of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) -- very dense, massive star clusters present in the central regions of most galaxies -- in a sample of 33 massive disk galaxies within 20 Mpc, part of the "Composite Bulges Survey." We use data from the Hubble Space Telescope including optical (F475W and F814W) and near-IR (F160W) images from the Wide Field Camera 3. We fit the images in 2D to take into account the full complexity of the inner regions of these galaxies (including the contributions of nuclear disks and bars), isolating the nuclear star cluster and bulge components. We derive NSC radii and magnitudes in all 3 bands, which we then use to estimate NSC masses. Our sample significantly expands the sample of massive late-type galaxies with measured NSC properties. We clearly identify nuclear star clusters in nearly 80% of our galaxies, putting a lower limit on the nucleation fraction in these galaxies that is higher than previous estimates. We find that the NSCs in our massive disk galaxies are consistent with previous NSC mass-NSC radius and Galaxy Mass-NSC Mass relations. However, we also find a large spread in NSC masses, with a handful of galaxies hosting very low-mass, compact clusters. Our NSCs are aligned in PA with their host galaxy disks but are less flattened. They show no correlations with bar or bulge properties. We develop a neural network based pipeline to estimate masses of galaxy clusters with a known redshift directly from photon information in X-rays. Our neural networks are trained using supervised learning on simulations of eROSITA observations, focusing in this paper on the Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS). We use convolutional neural networks which are modified to include additional information of the cluster, in particular its redshift. In contrast to existing work, we utilize simulations including background and point sources to develop a tool which is usable directly on observational eROSITA data for an extended mass range from group size halos to massive clusters with masses in between $10^{13}M_\odot

We investigate the roles of major and minor mergers during brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) assembly using surface brightness profiles, line indices, and fundamental plane relations. Based on our own sample and consistently reanalyzed Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, we find that BCGs and luminous normal ellipticals (LNEs) have similar central velocity dispersions, central absorption line strengths, and central surface brightnesses. However, BCGs are more luminous due to their much larger radial extent. These properties result in a flattening of the Faber$-$Jackson and Mg$_{\rm b}-$luminosity relations above 10$^{10.6}$ L$_{\odot,g'}$. We use this effect to estimate an amount of $60-80%$ of accreted and merged light in BCGs relative to LNEs, which agrees with results from cosmological simulations. We determine the contribution of this excess light (EL) at each radius from the difference between the surface flux profiles of BCGs and LNEs. It is small in the center but increases steeply to 50% at $\sim$3 kpc radius. The shape of these profiles suggests that BCGs could be formed from LNEs in three major merger processes. This is also consistent with the mild increase of the S\'ersic indices from $n\approx4$ to $n\approx6$, as confirmed in merger simulations. We note that minor mergers cannot be the dominant origin of the BCG's EL because they deposit too few stars at intermediate radii $r\lesssim20$ kpc. The shape of the EL profile also explains a detected offset of 0.14 dex of the fundamental planes for BCGs and LNEs relative to each other., Comment: 40 pages, 20 figures, 10 tables. The eighteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS) is the first one for SDSS-V, the fifth generation of the survey. SDSS-V comprises three primary scientific programs, or "Mappers": Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Black Hole Mapper (BHM), and Local Volume Mapper (LVM). This data release contains extensive targeting information for the two multi-object spectroscopy programs (MWM and BHM), including input catalogs and selection functions for their numerous scientific objectives. We describe the production of the targeting databases and their calibration- and scientifically-focused components. DR18 also includes ~25,000 new SDSS spectra and supplemental information for X-ray sources identified by eROSITA in its eFEDS field. We present updates to some of the SDSS software pipelines and preview changes anticipated for DR19. We also describe three value-added catalogs (VACs) based on SDSS-IV data that have been published since DR17, and one VAC based on the SDSS-V data in the eFEDS field., Comment: Accepted to ApJS

We present new, deep optical observations of the early-type galaxy NGC 4278, which is located in a small loose group. We find that the galaxy lacks fine substructure, i.e., it appears relaxed, out to a radius of $\sim$70 kpc. Our $g$- and $i$-band surface brightness profiles are uniform down to our deepest levels of $\sim$28 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. This spans an extremely large radial range of more than 14 half-mass radii. Combined with archival globular cluster (GC) number density maps and a new analysis of the total mass distribution obtained from archival Chandra X-ray data, we find that the red GC subpopulation traces well the stellar mass density profile from 2.4 out to even 14 half-mass radii, while the blue GC subpopulation traces the total mass density profile of the galaxy over a large radial range. Our results reinforce the scenario that red GCs form mostly in-situ along with the stellar component of the galaxy, while the blue GCs are more closely aligned with the total mass distribution in the halo and were accreted along with halo matter. We conclude that for galaxies where the X-ray emission from the hot halo is too faint to be properly observable and as such is not available to measure the dark matter profile, the blue GC population can be used to trace this dark matter component out to large radii., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. We discuss the statistical distribution of galaxy shapes and viewing angles under the assumption of triaxiality by deprojecting observed Surface Brightness (SB) profiles of 56 Brightest Cluster Galaxies coming from a recently published large deep-photometry sample. For the first time, we address this issue by directly measuring axis ratio profiles without limiting ourselves to a statistical analysis of average ellipticities. We show that these objects are strongly triaxial, with triaxiality parameters 0.39 $ \leq T \leq $ 0.72, have on average axis ratios $< p(r) > = $ 0.84 and $< q(r) > =$ 0.68, and are more spherical in the central regions but flatten out at large radii. Measured shapes in the outskirts agree well with the shapes found for simulated massive galaxies and their dark matter halos from both the IllustrisTNG and the Magneticum simulations, possibly probing the nature of dark matter. We present observations of ASASSN-20hx, a nearby ambiguous nuclear transient (ANT) discovered in NGC 6297 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We observed ASASSN-20hx from $-$30 to 275 days relative to peak UV/optical emission using high-cadence, multi-wavelength spectroscopy and photometry. From Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data, we determine that the ANT began to brighten on 2020 June 22.8 with a linear rise in flux for at least the first week. ASASSN-20hx peaked in the UV/optical 30 days later on 2020 July 22.8 (MJD = 59052.8) at a bolometric luminosity of $L = (3.15 \pm 0.04) \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The subsequent decline is slower than any TDE observed to date and consistent with many other ANTs. Compared to an archival X-ray detection, the X-ray luminosity of ASASSN-20hx increased by an order of magnitude to $L_{x} \sim 1.5 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and then slowly declined over time. The X-ray emission is well-fit by a power law with a photon index of $\Gamma \sim 2.3 - 2.6$. Both the optical and near infrared spectra of ASASSN-20hx lack emission lines, unusual for any known class of nuclear transient. The galaxy cluster system RXCJ0225.9-4154 with the two sub-clusters A3016 and A3017 is embedded in a large-scale structure filament with signatures of filamentary accretion. A Chandra observation of this system shows the two clusters as well as a filament of X-ray emission connecting them and a galaxy group therein. The main cluster, A3017, shows indications of shocks most probably from a recent interaction with cluster components along the filament axis as well as a cold front. The filament between the two clusters is likely to be heated by the accretion shocks of the clusters and we discuss two scenarios for the origin of this X-ray filament. We present detailed morphological, photometric, and stellar-kinematic analyses of the central regions of two massive, early-type barred galaxies with nearly identical large-scale morphologies. Both have large, strong bars with prominent inner photometric excesses that we associate with boxy/peanut-shaped (B/P) bulges; the latter constitute ~ 30% of the galaxy light. Inside its B/P bulge, NGC 4608 has a compact, almost circular structure (half-light radius R_e approx. 310 pc, S\'ersic n = 2.2) we identify as a classical bulge, amounting to 12.1% of the total light, along with a nuclear star cluster (R_e ~ 4 pc). NGC 4643, in contrast, has a nuclear disc with an unusual broken-exponential surface-brightness profile (13.2% of the light), and a very small spheroidal component (R_e approx. 35 pc, n = 1.6; 0.5% of the light). IFU stellar kinematics support this picture, with NGC 4608's classical bulge slowly rotating and dominated by high velocity dispersion, while NGC 4643's nuclear disc shows a drop to lower dispersion, rapid rotation, V-h3 anticorrelation, and elevated h4. Both galaxies show at least some evidence for V-h3 correlation in the bar (outside the respective classical bulge and nuclear disc), in agreement with model predictions. Standard 2-component (bulge/disc) decompositions yield B/T ~ 0.5-0.7 (and bulge n > 2) for both galaxies. We present results from the Wendelstein Weak Lensing (WWL) pathfinder project, in which we have observed three intermediate redshift Planck clusters of galaxies with the new 30'$\times 30$' wide field imager at the 2m Fraunhofer Telescope at Wendelstein Observatory. We investigate the presence of biases in our shear catalogues and estimate their impact on our weak lensing mass estimates. The overall calibration uncertainty depends on the cluster redshift and is below 8.1-15 per cent for $z \approx 0.27-0.77$. It will decrease with improvements on the background sample selection and the multiplicative shear bias calibration. We present the first weak lensing mass estimates for PSZ1 G109.88+27.94 and PSZ1 G139.61+24.20, two SZ-selected cluster candidates. Based on Wendelstein colors and SDSS photometry, we find that the redshift of PSZ1 G109.88+27.94 has to be corrected to $z \approx 0.77$. We investigate the influence of line-of-sight structures on the weak lensing mass estimates and find upper limits for two groups in each of the fields of PSZ1 G109.88+27.94 and PSZ1 G186.98+38.66. We compare our results to SZ and dynamical mass estimates from the literature, and in the case of PSZ1 G186.98+38.66 to previous weak lensing mass estimates. We conclude that our pathfinder project demonstrates that weak lensing cluster masses can be accurately measured with the 2m Fraunhofer Telescope., Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures. Submitted to MNRAS

Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) was imaged with the 2m telescope at Mt. Wendelstein Observatory in the Alps. Coma and tail monitoring was performed during 51 nights between 22 August 2015 and 9 May 2016. The images through r and i Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) filters show the dust distribution around the comet, while images in the SDSS g filter indicate also the presence of coma gas in early September 2015. The dust color of 67P implies intrinsic reddening of 9 %/100nm. After maximum shortly after perihelion passage the dust activity decreased with a heliocentric exponent of 4.1 to 4.2 from late September 2015 until May 2016. The opposition surge during early 2016 can be explained by a linear light scattering phase function (beta ~ 0.04) or an asteroid-like HG-type phase function (G ~ 0.15). The radial brightness profile indicates a 'quasi-steady-state' dust coma from late September to the end of 2015. Dust fragmentation during about a month after perihelion may be responsible for radial coma profiles with slopes below unity, while dust accumulation due to very slow dust expansion velocity may result in steeper than unity profiles during 2016. Three fan-shape dust structures are characterized in the coma of 67P. A short dust ejection event on 22 -23 August 2015 has produced a dust arc-let and jet feature in the coma. In September 2015 the appearance of cometary dust tail is dominated by young dust produced around perihelion. Open clusters have been the focus of several exoplanet surveys but only a few planets have so far been discovered. The \emph{Kepler} spacecraft revealed an abundance of small planets around small, cool stars, therefore, such cluster members are prime targets for exoplanet transit searches. Kepler's new mission, K2, is targeting several open clusters and star-forming regions around the ecliptic to search for transiting planets around their low-mass constituents. Here, we report the discovery of the first transiting planet in the intermediate-age (800 Myr) Beehive cluster (Praesepe). K2-95 is a faint ($\mathrm{Kp = 15.5\,mag}$) $\mathrm{M3.0\pm0.5}$ dwarf from K2's Campaign 5 with an effective temperature of $\mathrm{3471 \pm 124\,K}$, approximately solar metallicity and a radius of $\mathrm{0.402 \pm 0.050 \,R_\odot}$. We detected a transiting planet with a radius of $\mathrm{3.47^{+0.78}_{-0.53} \, R_\oplus}$ and an orbital period of 10.134 days. We combined photometry, medium/high-resolution spectroscopy, adaptive optics/speckle imaging and archival survey images to rule out any false positive detection scenarios, validate the planet, and further characterize the system. The planet's radius is very unusual as M-dwarf field stars rarely have Neptune-sized transiting planets. The comparatively large radius of K2-95b is consistent with the other recently discovered cluster planets K2-25b (Hyades) and K2-33b (Upper Scorpius), indicating systematic differences in their evolutionary states or formation. These discoveries from K2 provide a snapshot of planet formation and evolution in cluster environments and thus make excellent laboratories to test differences between field-star and cluster planet populations., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figues.
